Workflow Engines

Definition

Workflow engines are systems that execute process logic, route tasks, manage state, and coordinate steps in a workflow.

A workflow engine defines what happens next in a process. It can manage triggers, steps, conditions, approvals, retries, dependencies, and status changes.

In agent systems, the workflow engine can work alongside AI reasoning. The engine provides structure and reliability. The agent handles flexible interpretation, language-heavy work, and decision support. Together, they prevent the system from becoming either too rigid or too chaotic.
